Mrs. Zeleski's Reading and Social Studies Classes
Everyday classroom needs: notebook, folder, paper, pencil, pen, and any book(s) we are using.
If any other supplies are needed, advanced warning will be given to allow time for getting them to class.
Rules of the Room
Only papers written in pencil, black or blue ink will be accepted. Red, pink, etc., can be used only to correct papers.
Textbooks or paperback books will be brought to class everyday. If you forget a book and need to borrow one from the shelf the cost is $.25 or something else of value. It will be returned as soon as the book is returned to me.
Worksheets will be punched to fit in a 3-ring binder, that is where it should be kept. If extra worksheets are needed to replace lost ones the cost is 10 minutes after school.
Late papers will be graded as per the student handbook.
No late papers will be accepted after the test for that chapter or reading book.
If your name is not on a worksheet, daily assignment, or test it will result in points off of your grade.
Books will be treated correctly at all times! Textbooks will be covered. Fines will be imposed for improper handling.
Disrespect to the teacher such as visiting with friends while I am speaking or rude comments to me or about me will not be tolerated.
Disrespect to other students such as rude comments, bullying, or interfering with another person's right to learn will not be tolerated.
Profanity: consequences will be imposed.
Gum, candy, food, or pop will not be allowed in the classroom without teacher permission. If you are caught with any of the above, a consequence will be imposed.
If these simple rules are followed, everyone will have a positive and productive learning experience in our classroom.
Reading Class
You must read at least one book each month for the months of September, October, November, January, February, March, and April. This is in addition to what we read in class.
You must read books of different genre each month. Examples of different genre would be: nonfiction (biography or autobiography), historical fiction, drama, mythology, realistic fiction, science fiction, or mystery.
The books must be at least 100 pages for 6th grade, 125 pages for 7th grade, and 150 pages for 8th grade, age appropriate, up to your reading ability, and one that you have not read previously.
I will assign a closing activity each month for the books that you read. Example: everyone will make a book jacket one month, everyone will make a story quilt one month, etc. These will be due the first week of the following month. These books are worth 100 points, the same as a test grade.
You cannot read ahead, this means you cannot read all 7 books in September and none the rest of the year.
Credit will be given for reading extra books. You will need to share orally with me what the book was about. Credit will be in the form of working toward a class party at the end of the year for the class that has read the most books.
You will need to complete a slip with the Title, Author, Genre, Number of Pages, and your Name on it to me for every book read, excluding class read books.
These reading assignments will enable you to read the things you chose, not the ones that I chose. So pick something that excites your imagination and learn to enjoy everything that books have to offer.
