St. John's School has several special events held throughout the year to enhance the learning experience and also to HAVE SOME FUN!  Some things are a yearly events, some other activities are specific to a certain year, and you can find information on those activities on this page, as well as the Friday Folder sent home and on this site, and also in the Parish Bulletin. 

Talent Show
The Student Council is once again sponsoring a Talent Show for all grades K-8 on Wednesday, May 21, at 1:00 p.m.   Parents are welcome to attend!

The Student Council would like to preview all acts either on Wednesday, May 14 or Thursday, May 15 after school in the gym.  Please bring your music with you if you are using any. 

May Crowning
May Crowning will take place during Mass on Friday, May 2nd at the 8:15 Mass.  The student body will proceed into church through a flower arch.  All students are asked to bring in either an artificial or real flower to honor Mary on her special day.  The students who bring in a flower will place their flower in a vase near Mary at the beginning of the service.  Parents are welcome.

Drop Off and Pick Up Committee Meeting
Please join us Thurs. May 8 at 7 p.m. in the Social Hall to discuss drop off and pick up concerns and solutions for next school year.  If unable to attend but want to be involved call or email: Megan Waldren, 304-5361 or megan@waldren.org.

Tuition Agreement and Extended Care Registration
We sent home the 2008-2009 Tuition Agreement and Extended Care Registration in your student’s folder last week.  These need to be completed and sent back to the office with the registration fee(s) and were due by Wednesday, April 30th.   If you did not get them in – please send them in immediately.    Please remember that we need separate checks for these forms and remember to complete and sign the back of the Tuition Agreement.  You do not need to send back the Extended Care Registration if you do not intend to use this service..

Please Return Library Books or Pay Fines
We are quickly approaching the end of the school year.  There are several books that as of this date have not been returned to the library.  If your student has a library book that has not been returned, please return it immediately or pay the fine for the lost book.   All books are due this Friday back to the library!

Vacation Bible School
In your student(s) folder, you will find a sign up sheet for Vacation Bible School.  This will run from June 16 to 20 in the mornings.  Forms are due back to Margie Gonser by May 31st so do not delay!   Cost is $10 per child.  Age range is ages 4 through 5th grade.                                                                                              

Tuition Agreement and Extended Care Registration
If you have not yet turned in the 2008-2009 Tuition Agreement and Extended Care Registration that were sent home several weeks ago, they need to be completed and sent back to the office with the registration fee(s).   If you did not get them in – please send them in immediately.    Please remember that we need separate checks for these forms and remember to complete and sign the back of the Tuition Agreement.  You do not need to send back the Extended Care Registration if you do not intend to use this service..

Marcus Theatre Scrip
As of this week, we are replacing the $5 Douglas Theater Scrip certificates with $10 Marcus Theatre Gift Cards.  The Marcus Theatre gift cards will hold a balance like any gift card.  Your Douglas Theatre Gift Certificates will be good until February of 2009. 

Collection Programs
The Student Council will award a pizza party to the class that has collected the most Box Tops, Campbell’s soup and Best Choice UPC’s over the course of the year.  We will continue to collect these for this year until Wednesday, May 14, when the winner will be announced.  As of today, 6th grade is in the lead with 3,411 items collected.  (Please note:  these items can be collected over the summer as the collection programs continue from year to year).  Thank you.

Payment of School Fees
Tuition Payments Are Now Overdue – Please Pay Immediately
Please be aware that all tuition payments were due in full by April 15th.   We still have families that have outstanding balances for the 2008 – 2009 school year.  Unless arrangements have been made, these payments are now overdue!  Please make sure that these balances are paid in full immediately.  All registrations for next year and report cards are on hold until arrangements have been made.  This also holds true for any overdue payments for Extended Care.

Lunch Account Balances
Please make sure that your lunch accounts are paid up in full.  You can add up how many lunches your child(ren) will have the rest of the school year and pay in full along with any outstanding balance you may already have. (Grades k-5 $1.85 and Grades 6-8 $2.00).  Any unpaid balances will result in no report cards.  If you have any questions please contact Paula at 486-1860.

Jets Athletic Club Forms
All of next year’s  6th, 7th, and 8th graders should be bringing home a form to sign up for sports at St. John’s next year.  It is cheaper to participate in all sports if you sign up before August 22.  Please look for these in the Wednesday folders.  Please make sure you complete both sides of the form.

Last Day of School – May 23
School will dismiss at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23rd.  There will be no extended care.

Early Dismissal on May 16
There will be an early dismissal on Friday, May 16th because of the staff meeting.  Extended care will be available.

Attention 6th Grade Parents
Remember to keep working on getting your physical appointments scheduled for your 08-09 7th graders.  These need to be turned in to the office before the beginning of the school year.   All immunizations will also need to be up to date. *** An immunization form is being sent home this week in your student’s folder.  However, any physical form that your physician has will be accepted.

Altar Boy Leadership Camp
Altar Boys who will be entering grades 6 -9 in the fall of 2008 are invited to attend a Leadership Camp at Camp Kateri Tekawitha this summer.  The dates are July 13 – 19 or July 20 – 26.  The cost is $165 per boy with financial assistance available by contacting Father Barnhill at 308-697-3722.  The spiritual director for this camp will be Father Scott Courtney.   Activities include daily Mass, confession, gospel reflection, speakers, swimming, archery, obstacle course, mud slide, sports, games and much more.  Applications are available in the school office.  Registration is due by June 1, 2008 and space is limited!

May 13:   Last regular meeting – walk to ice cream store:  PLEASE RETURN PERMISSION SLIP THAT IS COMING HOME TODAY.
May 24:   Autism Walk: 11:00-3 to help run carnival games, face painting etc.

Band Information for 4th Grade Parents
Parents of 4th grade students and students who are interested in participating in 5th grade band during the 2008-2009 school year, are asked to attend a MANDATORY informational meeting.  If you plan to have your child play in band, it is mandatory that you attend one of these meetings.  The meetings will be held on Thursday, April 24th from 7 – 8 p.m. or on Tuesday, April 29th from 7 – 8 p.m.  These meetings will be held at the Pius X High School LPAC (auditorium).  YOU NEED ONLY ATTEND ONE MEETING.

KFOR Summer Fun Passes
We are sending home a sample of the 2008 KFOR Summer Fun Pass.  These will be available for sale at $5 each after May 1st.  As in the past, all profits go to St. John’s school.

Seventh Grade and Kindergarten Physicals and Immunizations
According to state law, any student entering Kindergarten or Seventh Grade must have all their immunizations up to date and have a Physical and Vision Evaluation dated within the last six months.  Physicals can be accepted with any date after March 1st.  Visions Evaluations are required for kindergarten only.

Immunizations that are required are 3 doses of DtaP, DTP, or DT, or Td vaccine, 3 doses of polio vaccine, 2 doses of MMR vaccine, and 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine and 1 dose of varicella (chicken Pox vaccine) or written documentation of having had the disease from the parent.   If you have any questions, please contact the office.  If you already have these requirements completed, please make sure the forms get to the office as soon as possible.  These requirements need to be completed before your child can start school next fall.

2nd Annual Nebraska Autism Walk
The Walk will be held on Saturday, May 24th, 2008 at the Lincoln Saltdogs Stadium   It will begin at 12:00 noon with children’s activities followed by the Autism Walk at 1:00 p.m.   Anyone interested in walking for the Nebraska Autism Walk should go to autismspeaks.org to register.

Spring Band Concert
The Spring Band Concert will be Tuesday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the gym at Pius (band members need to be there by 6:45).  Students must wear school uniforms and bring their instruments, music stands from home and music.  The concert should last about an hour.  The rehearsal for this concert will be Monday evening, May 12th in the gym at Pius.  Beginning Band (5th) will rehearse from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.  Advanced band will rehearse from 7:15 to 8:00 p.m.  Students must bring their instrument, music, and music stand from home.  If you have students in both bands, have the students bring something silent to do during the other band’s rehearsal.  Students may wear casual clothes to rehearsal.

If you know of a conflict now, please let your band director know as soon as possible.  If your child is ill or an emergency comes up the day of the rehearsal or concert, please leave a message for either Mike or Karen Murphy at 423-4754.

Eighth Grade Graduation Dress Guidelines
Graduation will be May 16 -Friday at 7:00 p.m.  There have been questions about appropriate dressing guidelines for the students.  Young women need to wear modest dresses or modest skirts and blouses.  Note, the Student Handbook guidelines, page 12, 4e.  “All shirts must cover the entire shoulder area (from the neck to the edge of the shoulder).  No spaghetti straps, tanks, etc.  No necklines lower than 2 inches below the base of the neck and no skin showing in their mid-section.  In other words, no skin showing from 2 inches below the neck to 3 inches above the knee.”   Sweaters and/or shawls can help to modify the approved guidelines as above.

Young men need to wear dress slacks with a dress shirt and tie.  No polos.  Thank you.

Catholic SKY Camp
Applications are available in the office for the Catholic Summer Kamp for Youth  (SKY) for the 2008 season.    The camps are for students who will be entering grades 6 – 9 in the Fall of 2008.  Camps run from May 27th through June 23rd, lasting three days at a time, and are held at Camp Kateri Tekakwitha in McCool Junction.  The cost is $75 for the camp.  Applications must be received by May 2, 2008; however, camps are limited in size and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
